Hi, furriends! Tyson here with some important mews for my fellow felines and our humans.
You know how dogs sometimes get those tasty-smelling chewable pills for their allergies? They’re called Apoquel, and they’re often flavored like pork liver. My fur sister, Sassy the German shepherd, takes these because she chews her feet (ew, dog feet). Well, turns out Apoquel smells really good to some cats – so good that we might be tempted to sneak one if the humans aren’t looking.
But here’s the scary part: Apoquel can cause acute kidney injury in cats. NC State’s Veterinary Hospital recently treated two cats who got into their canine sibling’s Apoquel stash, and both needed dialysis to recover. That’s serious stuff, furriends.
So here’s my cat-to-cat (and cat-to-human) advice:
- Keep all medications stored safely where curious paws can’t reach.
- Don’t let humans leave pills out, even for “just a minute.”
- If a cat eats any dog medication – especially Apoquel – call your vet right away.
Stay safe, stay healthy, and remember – if it smells like bacon, it might be trouble in disguise.
